Sleep cycle calculator

Most sleep calculators give you a list of times. This one also shows you what is happening inside each cycle, which is the part that explains why a short night hits the way it does.
Sleep cycle calculator
Set your bedtime and how many cycles you want. You get the wake-up time and a breakdown of where the deep sleep and REM fall across the night.
How the calculation works
The calculator assumes a 90-minute cycle and about 15 minutes to fall asleep, then distributes the stages the way a real night distributes them: deep slow-wave sleep loaded into the first two cycles, REM periods lengthening steadily towards morning.
That distribution is the part most sleep calculators leave out, and it is the part that explains the results. A four-cycle night is not simply a five-cycle night minus twenty percent — it is a night with almost all of its deep sleep intact and a disproportionate amount of its REM missing, because REM is concentrated in exactly the cycle you dropped.
What each number of cycles gives you
| Cycles | Sleep | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| 6 | 9 hours | The top of the adult range. All the deep sleep you need plus a long final REM period. Useful after a short week. |
| 5 | 7½ hours | The usual sweet spot for an adult — comfortably inside the recommended 7 to 9 hours. |
| 4 | 6 hours | Below the recommended minimum. Deep sleep is largely intact; REM takes most of the loss. |
| 3 | 4½ hours | An emergency amount. Expect measurable impairment in reaction time and judgement. |
How accurate is a sleep cycle calculator?
Honestly: it is an average, not a measurement, and it is worth knowing what it can and cannot do.
- Cycle length varies. Ninety minutes is the mean. Real cycles run from about 70 to 120 minutes, the first is usually the shortest, and the same person varies between nights.
- Falling asleep varies. Fifteen minutes is the typical figure, but if you are sleep-deprived it may be five, and if you are wound up it may be forty.
- Errors compound. By the fifth cycle a ten-minute-per-cycle difference has become close to an hour.
- A wearable is not much better. Consumer sleep trackers infer stages from movement and heart rate, and they agree with laboratory polysomnography only moderately well on stage-level detail.
What the calculation is genuinely good for is choosing between two candidate wake-up times that are 45 minutes apart, and for making the shape of the night visible. What it cannot do is predict your cycle boundaries precisely enough to be worth losing sleep over. If the choice is between eight hours and a neat 7½, take the eight.

Common questions
How do you calculate sleep cycles?
Count forward from when you fall asleep in 90-minute blocks. Add about 15 minutes to your bedtime for falling asleep, then multiply 90 minutes by the number of cycles you want — five cycles is 7½ hours of sleep.
How many sleep cycles should I get?
Five or six. Five cycles is 7½ hours and six is 9 hours, which brackets the 7 to 9 hours recommended for adults.
Are sleep cycle calculators accurate?
They are averages rather than measurements. Real cycles run from about 70 to 120 minutes and vary night to night, so the error compounds across a night. They are useful for choosing between candidate wake-up times, not for predicting your exact cycle boundaries.
Is it better to sleep 6 hours or 7.5 hours?
Seven and a half. Do not cut total sleep to land on a neat number of cycles — total sleep matters considerably more than where the alarm falls within a cycle.
When do you get the most deep sleep?
In the first two cycles. Deep slow-wave sleep is heavily front-loaded, and in a typical eight-hour night there is almost none left after about five and a half hours.
