What is core sleep?

If your Apple Watch keeps telling you most of your night was “core” sleep, nothing is wrong. It is the label Apple gives to the lighter stages, and it is supposed to be the biggest number on the chart.
Apple's name for light sleep
"Core sleep" is Apple's term for the lighter non-REM stages that sleep scientists call N1 and N2. It is not a separate kind of sleep and it is not a medical term — Apple chose the word "core" rather than "light" because light sounds dismissive, and this stage is genuinely doing work.
It should be the largest number on your watch. Core sleep makes up roughly half of a normal night, so seeing far more core than deep or REM is exactly what a healthy night looks like.
How core sleep maps onto the real stages

Other trackers use different words for the same thing — most call it "light sleep". Fitbit, Garmin, Oura and Whoop all report a light or core category covering the same underlying stages, so the numbers are not directly comparable between brands.
What core sleep does
The name is doing something useful. N2 in particular is not idle time: it is where sleep spindles appear — short bursts of brain activity strongly linked to consolidating what you learned during the day — along with K-complexes, which appear to help keep you asleep in the face of minor disturbances.
N2 also lengthens through the night. The later cycles are mostly core sleep and REM, which is why the second half of a night is dominated by those two on your watch.
How much core sleep should you get?
Around half your total sleep, so roughly 3½ to 4½ hours on a seven-to-nine-hour night. There is no target to hit: core sleep is what is left once deep sleep and REM have taken their share, so it moves as a consequence of those rather than on its own.
If your core sleep looks high, that is normal, not a problem. People see a big core number next to a small deep number and conclude they are sleeping badly. The proportions are supposed to look like that. Total sleep time and how consistent your timing is matter far more than the split between stages — and the split is an estimate anyway.
How accurate is any of this?
Worth holding lightly. A watch infers sleep stages from movement, heart rate and heart-rate variability. The clinical standard, polysomnography, measures brain activity directly with an EEG. Consumer devices are reasonably good at telling sleep from wake and considerably less reliable at stage-level breakdowns.
What a tracker is genuinely useful for is trends — whether your total sleep is drifting down across a month, whether your bedtime is wandering, whether the nights after a late finish look different.
